Guacamelee is my favorite metroidvania game of all time. There, I said it. Developed by Drinkbox Studios (Sound familiar? They developed #9 on this list: Severed), this luchadore/Mexico/dia-de-los-muertos inspired 2D platformer is one of the most difficult and satisfying games I can think of for the Playstation Vita. This game is one of the few games to make me care about combos- I actually wanted to practice to unleash masterful attacks on my unfortunate enemies. That might sound odd, but I hate combo systems in games (which is why I’ll never review a fighting game). Guacamelee’s combat, however, was expertly crafted. The platforming is where the game truly grabbed me, though; there are so many different gameplay elements that keep building on top of each other that it gets pretty difficult near the end. There is nothing as satisfying as finally mastering a difficult platforming section and then completing it without any hitch. I chose to go for the platinum trophy in this game, and that added even more fun hours to my play-clock. If you like metroidvania titles, PLAY THIS GAME. If anything, play this game for the memes. It has memes galore.
