#16- The Swapper
Cloning ethics and stem-cell debates always seem to be on the back-burner when compared to other issues such as racial discrimination, foreign policy, and business ethics. Perhaps that is one reason why I love The Swapper– it chooses to tackle issues that aren’t really talked about in video games. The Swapper is a 2D Metroidvania-esque puzzle-platformer where the main mechanic is creating a clone of yourself and swapping consciousness between the two bodies. This method of solving puzzles can lead to the grizzly demise of your clone many times- or is it the death of the original you? What happens when you keep cloning yourself, switching consciousness, and killing the original- are YOU really YOU? Questions such as these permeate The Swapper and lend the title into being one of the more thought-provoking titles on the Vita. I don’t think The Swapper gets enough credit for its story or level design- I encourage everyone to play this game, if only just to see that wonderful ending.
