Set between the events of Star Ocean: The Second Story and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, the new Star Ocean adventure for PS4 is available now. Priced at $59.99, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is the latest entry from Tri-Ace. It also features characters by iconic designer, “akiman,” Akira Yasuda.

Long-time fans of the series as well as newcomers to the franchise can expect an epic sci-fi adventure. Told through a mixture of gameplay and dynamic cut scenes, the new Star Ocean aims to add an additional layer of depth and immersive storytelling to the series. The game mechanics and action sequences have both received some modern upgrades in the latest edition. This will also be the first game in the series to feature a real-time action battle system.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness takes place centuries after humans have left Earth for the distant Faykreed star system. Swordsman, Fidel Camuze, and his childhood friend, Miki Sauvester, set out to protect their village from the growing tides of civil unrest. Joined by a diverse group of companions, Fidel and Miki are tasked with protecting the Kingdom of Resulia while also being drawn into battle with outside forces.

The game is already receiving some mixed reviews over the updates. Some critics say the sacrifice for speed in combat has left the narrative a little more shallow. If you have or are planning to pick up the game, what do you think of the changes? Did you think the revamped battle system helped or hurt the series? Let me know in the comments.
