The great Crystal Joystick is up for grabs, in the first ever official Hey Poor Player game of the year episode!
NOTE: Some post-compression audio issues happened with this episode. Everyone’s voices are quiet, while the opening end ending music is really loud. We’re really sorry about your ears, and are working on fixing it.
Come one, come all, to the sparkling diamond thunderdome. Before you stands a shining retro game controller, dazzling and pristine, forged from pure, unblemished crystal. That’s right; for the first time ever, Hey Poor Player is crowning an official game of the year. 12 games shall enter, but only one shall come home with the coveted Crystal Joystick.
Jay Petrequin, Francis DiPersio, Adam Foster and Gary Swallow band together with a bag of 22 nominees, narrowed down to a final 12 for consideration in the great competition of Game of the Year. Two groups of six games each are arranged, with three winners extracted from each. Those final six are brought together, and from them, a single winner pulled. Jay delivers a Shakespearean monologue about Undertale. Frank gets angry about Metal Gear Solid V. Adam nominates a bunch of stuff nobody else has heard of, and pees on Facebook. Gary doesn’t understand adventure games, but does understand The Witcher III. At around the 1:53:00 mark, Jay spoils Batman: Arkham Knight for some reason. We talk about this article on the development of Destiny. There’s no Watcha’ Playin’ or Round Table this time, because who the hell wants that after listening to us do this after two hours?
For those playing along at home, here’s the full list of our final 12 nominees. Enjoy.
- Life is Strange
- Tales from the Borderlands
- The Witcher III
- Cities: Skylines
- Stella Glow
- Hotline Miami 2
- Crypt of the Necrodancer
