Bid Adieu to First Party Games on the PlayStation Vita
PlayStation First Party Vita titles are currently at a standstill with production, Sony has revealed during an interview with 4Gamer.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s Senior Vice President Masayasu Ito spoke about about the Vita’s lifespan so far stating, “At the beginning the PS Vita did not resonate with age targets under 20, but now the situation is changing and the popularity with younger demographics is increasing. Minecraft: PS Vita Editionhas provided a boost.”
When asked about any new development regarding first part titles coming to the Vita, Ito described the shift in their strategy is to focus development solely on the PlayStation 4, explaining that, “Currently, first party studios have no titles in development for PS Vita. Since third parties are working very hard on PS Vita, SCE’s own strategy is to focus on PS4, which is a new platform.”
Sony hinted at this during E3 of this year when Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida was quoted as saying, “Instead of spending lots of money making big Killzone games on Vita, those large studios are focusing on PS4, but we know that the smaller games work very well on PS Vita because it doesn’t require that PS4 tech to make the game fun.”
Being a new owner of Sony’s handheld, I for one can say I’m sad to see all first party attention moving to the PS4. I’m having a blast playing through Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and was hoping to see more of the well polished, AAA titles on my portable. Is there any first party developers you’d like to see create a game on the Vita? Let us know in the comments below.
