Legendary developer “overcome with sadness” over Iwata’s sudden death
It’s certainly a sad day at Nintendo and for gamers everywhere. With the news of yesterday’s passing of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who had been suffering from bile duct complications in recent years, the landscape of the industry certainly will never be the same.
Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary game designer behind the iconic Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong and other key Nintendo franchises and General Manager of Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development issued a statement to the Wall Street Journal speaking out on the passing of his friend and former colleague.
“I am surprised at this sudden news and overcome with sadness,” Mr. Miyamoto said in a statement issued through Nintendo on Monday.
He further added that Nintendo would maintain the game-development stance that he and Mr. Iwata established, and do their best to work with developers to create the kind of future successes Iwata would have wanted.
As of now, it’s up in the air who will take over the console giant, though as for the time being Mr. Miyamoto and Nintendo engineer Genyo Takeda are temporarily filling the position.
