Dark Souls’ sadistic spirit lives on in this 13-minute preview of Salt and Sanctuary
Have you ever wondered what Dark Souls would look like if it were a product of the 16-bit era? Well, neither have we, honestly, but we’re pretty sure if it did come out in the early ’90s it’d probably look something like Salt and Sanctuary, developer Ska Studios‘ upcoming PS Vita and Playstation 4 game.
The gritty world of Salt and Sanctuary certainly seems to share a similar aesthetic to the subdued and haunting landcapes of From Software’s Souls series, but the similarities are much greater than their visual penchant for the foreboding, as witnessed in Youtuber VaatiVidya’s recent preview of the game. “There’s block, parry, roll, light attack, strong attack, jump, guard breaks, a dedicated healing potion, and a stamina bar that works identically to those in the Souls games,” the commenter elaborates when discussing the game’s familiar mechanics, “But the familiarity goes further than just controls. It’s in so many elements that of game’s design, and there’s so many moments in the game where things just click for you.”
As big fans of both the Souls games as well as retro sidescrollers, this 13-minute demo of Salt and Sanctuary absolutely has us eager to explore the haunting and visually striking world Ska Studios has in store for us when the game is released later this year.
