Destiny’s 1.1 update is a sea change for exotics

Destiny developer Bungie released their 1.1 update to the game today, which includes changes to Exotic-quality weapons and armor and a different route for farming materials.

Bungie announced buffs to many Exotic weapons, including Thorn, a hand cannon, and Vex Mythoclast, a fusion rifle. The update also includes an increase to starting damage for Exotics across the board; it used to be 260.

In addition, upgrading Exotic weapons and armor no longer require Ascendent Energy (for weapons) and Ascendent Shards (for armor). Instead, the final upgrade path of all Exotics now requires a new material type — Exotic Shards — which can be obtained by dismantling an exotic weapon or piece of armor, or purchased from Xur for seven strange coins.

In the update’s blog post, Bungie notes: “Exotic Weapons are designed to look, feel, and sound overpowered. At the same time, they are not supposed to break the balance of the game. We hope these weapons challenge the way players think about their loadouts. Exotics will be a constant work in-progress!”

Finally, one of the biggest changes of the update means that players will no longer be forced to farm the naturally-occurring materials. Spinmetal, Spiritbloom, Helium Filaments, and Relic Iron can now be purchased with Crucible Marks and Vanguard Marks.
