Alan Wake and Max Payne developer’s latest thriller Quantum Break looks to be worth the wait.
It’s been over a year since Max Payne and Alan Wake developer Remedy’s time manipulating Xbox One exclusive title, Quantum Break, was announced. Thankfully, it looks like the wait has been worth it, as yesterday the studio’s creative director Sam Lake showed off a lengthy gameplay demo of Quantum Break from Gamescom 2014.
The visually stunning footage features the game’s timeshifting protagonist Jack Joyce as he uses his powers over time to get the upper hand in a shootout against a squad of heavily-armed gunmen who are in hot pursuit of the one-time time-travel experiment turned hero. During the 8 minute gameplay teaser Joyce mixes traditional stop-and-pop cover-based gunplay with his ability to freeze and manipulate time to get the drop on his pursuers. You’ll see the game’s protagonist speed up time to flank his enemies, as well as stop time altogether in order to escape the blast radius of incoming grenades.
One of the trailer’s more cinematic moments involves an 18 wheeler which is careening off of a bridge. Jack freezes time and the hulking semi-trailer is suspended in time moments before it would have tumbled into the drink. Jack makes his way through a chaotic scene of debris, gently pushing away hovering debris as he makes his way to the trailer’s explosive conclusion, which pits him against two armored enforcers who are immune to his time-altering abilities.
