World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor revealed

Heroes and Villains

Ahhh, World of Warcraft. You always know how to get me to keep coming back.

I remember the first time I played World of Warcraft. It was 2005, and I believe my days of Final Fantasy XI Online were ending. My step-father brought home a new game to play, and it piqued my interest. After much convincing and prodding, I was finally able to create my first character on WoW; a Night Elf Hunter named Rubyknight. I was hooked. It was so much fun, killing things, progressing levels, seeing if I could survive the fall from the top of the tree in the Night Elf starter zone. What could be more fun? Oh that’s right, not having to share a computer and an account with my step-father.

Anyhow, today at Blizzcon Blizzard announced Warlords of Draenor, the 5th expansion in the World of Warcraft series.

World of Warcraft has come along way since 2004, fighting foes from Ragnaros to Illidan, going from to Goldshire to a island filled with Pandas. Warlords of Draenor is no exception.

Mists of Pandaria has been coming to a close with the latest Patch, 5.4: Siege of Orgrimmar. Garrosh, the leader of the Horde, has to be taken down due to his evil exploits in the land of Pandaria. Warlords of Draenor takes place some time afterwards, where Garrosh is being put on trial. Just like a certain Gerudo we all know and love, he escapes before a verdict can be reached. He allies with a unknown friend who can bend time, and travels to a time long ago. A time when The Outlands were still a part of Draenor, and we’ll be exploring just that. The goal of the expansion is to defeat the Iron Horde. And do not worry avid WoW players; Garrosh is NOT the final boss, he just facilitates the story.

Level Cap 100

Besides the story-telling, the expansion will be bring so much more to the game. Here’s a list of what we know so far:

  • Level Cap raised to 100
    • At every level, characters will earn a major permanent boost to one of their key spells and abilities
    • New talent tier upon reaching 100
  • Free level 90 with purchase of expansion
    • The point for this is to allow players both new and old to jump into the new content right from the start
    • Will be given gear appropriate for starting content
  • New Character Models
  • Garrisons – WoW’s answer to housing.
    • Build a base like in an RTS and customize it
    • Can choose what zone it is located in
    • Can collect followers, resources and more
    • Offline progression. Say you assemble a group to go collect and explore, it might take four days. Four days later they will come back, and might have epic loot.
    • Followers can get your character epic gear.
    • Possibly have access to professions you don’t have. Ex. Build a blacksmith and get benefits from it. You can assign followers to a mine and get ore that way.
    • Three tiers – you get more plots with each expansion
    • Monuments and trophies. You can possibly display a special monument if you have a unique achievement. Or maybe you could display the head of a rare mob you killed
    • Farming is back
  • Inventory will be updated.
    • Toys, Heirlooms, and maybe Tabards now account-wide
    • Can assign bags a specific type of item (ex. Mining bag, Cooking bag)
    • Items that just entered bags will glow white
    • Can craft directly from bank
    • Quests items won’t be stored in bags, but in a Quest UI.
    • Stack sizes will be changed to 100 for most items (up from 20)
  • Adventure’s Guild – similar to Armory but in-game.
    • Tells you what to do each day and what you would like to do based on your character’s gear, progression and more
  • Heroic Upper Blackrock Spire, along with 7 other new dungeons.
    • Bloodmaul Slag Mines will be in Frostfire Ridge and have 4 bosses, non-linear
    • Other dungeons are known as: Shadowmoon Burial Grounds, Iron Barracks, Auchindoun, Blackrock Foundry, and Arakkoa Spires. The last dungeon is unknown.
    • 3 Dungeons exclusive to max level
  • Two new raids, with a total of 16 bosses
    • Highmaul
    • Blackrock Foundry
    • New outdoor bosses
  • Blizzard to expand flex raiding
    • New raid difficulty: Mythic
    • No more 10/25 man progression, it is now 20 man progression
    • 10/25 man raids still exist, but will not be the cutting edge content
  • New PvP area, similar to Alterac Valley
    • There will be random bonuses, such as honor, BoE gear, items and more
    • Stated to be a Sandbox
  • Add more for professions
    • Like Mists of Pandaria had a lot of content to do with cooking, Warlords of Draenor’s Garrisons will cater to the rest of our professions.
    • Supposedly on a much more epic scale than how Mists treated cooking
  • Adding stats such as Movement Speed and Cleave
    • In addition, stats like Hit and Expertise will be retired
  • ANY quest can randomly award a bonus rare or epic item.

There you have it folks. This is almost everything we’ve learned about Warlord of Draenor, with only more new information to come.

This is looking out to be a very exciting expansion pack. In fact, Garrisons alone make me want to purchase this expansion. Dammit Blizzard!
