With all the talk of Pokemon X and Y following their worldwide release on 3DS this past Saturday, let us not forget about the TCG. A good trading card game is every bit as complex and fun as a video game, and the Pokemon trading car game is no exception. Releasing this December in Japan and next February across Europe and the US, the Pokemon Trading Card Game: XY expansion brings the same new aspects of the video games onto the card table.
So, what’s the down-and-dirty on this expansion? Mega Evolution. In the games, the new concept of Mega Evolution is a sort of tactical, in-battle evolution that can only be activated once per battle and wears off after. A lot of Pokemon have awesome Mega Evolutions in X and Y, and the TCG is preparing for a similar upgrade. In the TCG, Mega Evolutions are tied to Pokemon EX, and hopes to change the structure of the game altogether. Mega Evolution Pokemon have abilities, HP, and attacks that far outweigh anything of the EX monsters before them, but choosing to Mega Evolve comes at a cost, as doing so will automatically end your turn.
X and Y also bring a change in the form of the addition of the Fairy Type. This is another attempt to balance out the card game, as Fairies are unique in their resistance to Dark-type Pokemon. You can get your first Fairy-Types in the XY Kalos Starter Set, launching on November 8th. All XY booster packs and starter sets also come with codes for unlocking virtual cards in the online card game. Get ready to Mega Evolve your deck with X and Y!
