Shadowgate is Reborn Thanks to Zojoi, LLC

“The last thing you remember is standing before the wizard Lakmir as he gestured wildly, creating archaic patterns in the air and speaking something of a quest and the dreaded Warlock Lord. Now you find yourself in a dark wood with a secret entrance to a castle looming before you.”

Longtime fans of the point-and-click adventure genre will remember this as the opening to Icom Simulation’s 1987 classic, Shadowgate. One of the first point-and-click adventures released, and the first entry in the highly-acclaimed MacVenture series (the other two titles being the hardboiled Noir title Deja Vu and the haunting adventure Uninvited), Shadowgate lead players through a labyrinth full of diabolical traps, murderous monsters, and dark catacombs where death is one waning torchlight away. While the game has been ported across 10 platforms from the Mac, to the NES, and even Game Boy Color, fans have long clamored for an updated remake with high-def visuals, and now it’s finally in development. Zojoi, LLC, a new development studio founded by David Marsh, the original designer of Shadowgate, and Karl Roelofs, another former Icom Simulations employee.

This re-imagining of Shadowgate is set to feature a multitude of enhancements making it more than just an HD re-envisioning of the classic adventure. Some of the feature’s Zojoi listed on their site include:

  • Over 50 rooms of first-person, fantasy adventuring
  • Tons of new puzzles from the original creators
  • Intuitive command-based UI
  • Beautifully painted, hi-resolution artwork
  • Compelling game play and storytelling
  • IOS and Android device support (PC and Mac as well!)
  • Two soundtrack modes (Cinematic and 8-bit retro)
  • Atmospheric and object-specific animations
  • In-game hint system

Adventurers looking to brave the depths of Castle Shadowgate and vanquish the Warlock Lord and his raging behemoth will be able to start their journey on PC , Mac, iOS, and Android devices when the game is finally released. For now, enjoy these gorgeous concept screens.
