On October 26th, 2000- ten years ago today- the Playstation 2 saw it’s debut to the North American market. With the original Playstation being a runaway hit, the gaming public couldn’t wait to get their paws on Sony’s new and powerful black box.
Sony launched a huge ad campaign touting the power of the Playstation 2’s Emotion Engine. Even if they exaggerated the system’ processing and graphical capabilities a great deal, these commercial’s-as creepy as they are- still served as a powerful tool in marketing the system’s horsepower. Sony’s marketing tactics combined with the console’s ability to play those newfangled media discs, DVDs, ensured the system was going to be a huge success out of the gate.
Today, ten years since the launch of the system, Sony’s PS2 has been the host to hundreds of excellent games from some of the biggest franchises in modern gaming. The PS2’s software library is arguably the best and most diverse of any system with a seemingly bottomless catalog of triple A releases.
Having sold over 145 million units in the decade since the system’s release, the Playstation 2 as become the best selling console of all time. While releases aren’t exactly flooding the market anymore, the system still receives limited software support, making it one of the longest officially supported systems in gaming history.
Here’s a closing look at some of the Playstation 2’s most memorable moments.
