In the latest issue of CoroCoro, we learned about an interesting new dynamic being added to the Pokemon series in the upcoming X and Y games. This dynamic is called “Mega Evolution” in Japan, and so far six Pokemon have been revealed to have access to forms of this new variety. You can check out the gallery below. Here’s what we know about them so far.
MegaMawile is Fairy/Steel type, as is normal Mawile now. It has the Huge Power ability. MegaAmpharos is Electric/Dragon, an interesting new type combination, and has the ability Mold Breaker. MegaAbsol (my personal favorite) has the ability Magic Bounce, and although no type change has been revealed, its Mega form has wings, suggesting it to be Dark/Flying type. MegaBlaziken‘s ability is Speed Boost. MegaLucario has Adaptability, and is presumably keeping its Fighting/Steel typing. The previously-revealed new form of Mewtwo is confirmed to be a Mega as well, retaining its pure Psychic typing but gaining the Insomnia ability.
The details of how Mega Evolution works are currently hazy, but we have some clues. It is implied that the process of Mega Evolving a Pokemon is temporary and can only occur in battle, wearing off once the battle has ended. There is passing mention of something called a Mega Stone, which could be a hold item or an expendable battle item. It’s also known that the game’s first downloadable event will be a special Torchic, to be given out from October 12th to January 15th. This Torchic has the hidden ability Speed Boost, and comes with a hold item called “Blazikenite”. It is also specified that this Torchic “has the ability to become MegaBlaziken”, suggesting that not just any Pokemon of a type can achieve this form. Perhaps a Pokemon-specific item such as the Blazikenite must be used in conjunction with the Mega Stone? We’ll have to wait and see. It’s also worth noting that MegaMewtwo was previously announced in the US as “Awakened Mewtwo”, so the “Mega” title could be “awakened” in the english game.
We also see a new gym leader in one of the scans. This roller-bladed dame is named Koruni. All we currently know about her is that she understands the key to accessing these Mega Evolutions, suggesting that her gym may be themed after these instead of a specific type. I, for one, would like to see more creatively-themed Pokemon gyms, so here’s hoping.
Not to be left out, some regular new Pokemon were also revealed. We only have Japanese names so far. The happy little horned fellow on the left is Meekuru, a pure Grass-type and the pre-evolution of Gogoat. bugs Bunny’s forgotten cousin in the middle is a Normal-type called Horubii. It is classified as “The Digging Pokemon” and can have one of two abilities- Cheek Pouches or Pick Up. Finally, the one on the right that appears to be a midget Raichu is actually an Electric/Fairy type called Dedenne. It is classified as “The Antenna Pokemon”, and like its bunny friend, can have the Cheek Pouches or Pick Up ability.
So, what do you think of this new evolution type? How do you like these new forms, as well as the other new Pokemon we’ve seen? Check out the full gallery, let us know what you think in the comments, and keep on catching them all!
