Let’s get dark and gritty. let’s get somber, and probably rained on. We’re talking Limbo minus the chance of starting a crippling lifelong arachnophobia. We’re talking Monochroma.

Monochroma puts you in the shoes of a pair of brothers in a world ruined by corrupt industry in an alternate version of the 1950s.  You control the older of the two brothers, whose goal is to get your little brother to safety. The game is a 2D platformer designed to emulate the feeling of childhood in terms of how the game is played. In the game’s description, the idea is discussed that 2D platformers have a sort of inherent youth to them, like they’re the first step to something greater. As such, you play as a child. In the game you have to protect your brother, who has an overwhelming fear of the dark, and make your way through desolate towns and abandoned area to reach your ultimate goal. Platforming involves puzzles that blend in to the environment, promising to give the game an extremely smooth flow. A soundtrack to the game is being composed by the psychedelic folk band Gevende, whose score is sure to fit the world of a dystopian 1950s world. The world is dominated by corporations, and after the two brothers witness some dark, horrible truths behind the way the business is run and how it impacts the world, they decide it must be stopped.

There can be beauty in hopelessness.

Monochroma promises to mix the best of Limbo’s platforming and presentation with Ico’s dynamic of protecting your ally throughout the game. In order to prove the genuine nature behind this, a demo for the game is already available, and can be found here. Nowhere Studios claims to have already put a lot of work into the game, but has exhausted their savings. Their end goal is $80,000, with $120,000 and $160,000 stretch goals promising new levels added to the game. Donation perks include artwork from the game, fully-illustrated walkthrough guides, and limited editions including uniquely crafted art and a hat and scarf modeled after the ones worn by the game’s hero.

So you, too, can feel like you live in a hopeless dystopia.

Monochroma’s kickstarter page can be found here, where you can find out more through their video and description. You can also support the game on Steam greenlight, and follow it on Twitter and Facebook. You can find Nowhere Studios on both as well. Prepare to get lost in shadows and rain.
