Chroma Squad by Behold Studios

Did you watch Power Rangers as a kid? I sure did. Being one of the younger writers here, I got into it during the era of Time Force, Wild Force, and Dino Thunder, the later seasons that a lot of veteran fans didn’t like very much. But I’d still enjoy the original Mighty Morphin stuff, and occasionally even some of the Japanese Sentai seasons that never got adaptations here in the west. And every season of both the original Sentai and the US Power Rangers has one thing in common, recognizable even today; the spirit and the energy.  And those two things are exactly what Chroma Squad is aiming to capture.

Behold Studios first made a name for themselves with Knights of Pen and Paper, a very meta game controlling a group of tabletop RPG players, and their ability to create new ideas from classic facets of nerd culture now brings us Chroma Squad. In this game you manage your very own studio producing a brand new Sentai TV show, adding tactical strategy putting you in control  of how each episode of your show plays out. The game is heavily inspired by Power Rangers, Changeman, and even Captain Planet. (sucks to be the ranger with the “heart” power) You control the stuntmen, hire actors, upgrade your special effects to make everything explode. Eventually the actors get so engrossed in the show that they believe everything that is happening is real. Whether that includes rigging up actual robots to wreck the shit out of actual Tokyo has yet to be seen. Each ranger has customizable abilities and looks, so you can create the exact same Power Ranger team you dreamed up and drew pictures of as a kid. (c’mon, you know you did. It’s okay, I did too.)

Ready to morph!

Behold Studios is one of the most promising new studios out there, and have won several awards and prizes for their previous games. They’ve gotten to show their work across Tokyo Game Show, Brasil Game Show, E3, and many others. Some people hesitate to donate to projects by teams without a reputation, questioning whether the money will truly be put to good use. If all of this team’s credentials don’t put your mind at ease, I don’t know what will. They have reached a fifth of their total goal at the time of writing this, but they need your help to build the megazord this game hopes to be. Perks include a special edition comic book and art book, and even some special in-game features. The kickstarter page can be found here, and Behold Studios can be found at their website, facebook and twitter for news and info about the game’s progress. Power up and get ready to fight some saturday morning evil!
